My brother Drew texted me earlier this evening to tell me that Osama bin Laden was dead. I checked the news and it turned out he was right. I shot my fist into the air.
Generally, it is not wise or polite to speak ill of the dead. For Osama, though, I feel completely safe making an exception. He was a bad person who did bad things to innocent people.
I realize that this may only change the state of the war on terrorism in small way. After all, there are plenty more twerps standing ready to take his place.
But having been in high school on Sept. 11, 2001, and having seen so many things happen to my country over the past decade, I can relate the the strong sensation of satisfaction that has spread across the country. My generation saw terror strike home just as we were on the cusp of adulthood and have had to live with its effects for all of our adult lives. Bin Laden stole a lot of innocence from us, so now it’s a great relief to know that he has been smudged out.
I imagine older generations of Americans are also happy to see him go, but I don’t know what it’s like to see it from their perspective.
It’s also very good to know that no American service members died in this operation. Bravo to that, and may they never have to buy their own drinks ever again.
EDIT: Holy crap I butchered that headline. Just, damn.
MORE EDIT: I can’t believe I did that. Jeez, that’s what I get for blogging at 1 a.m.
EVEN MORE EDIT: Thanks to everyone who pointed out my embarrassing mistake. I just wished I’d gotten online and checked earlier this morning. For anyone reading now that I’ve corrected the mistake, my error was that I typed a “b” when I meant to type “s” for “Osama” in the headline. One false keystoke, and now I look like an idiot.
Also, according to my site’s statistics, about a dozen people came to my blog through Web searches for topics about “Obama is dead” and such. So, either they were looking for other screwups like me, or they had a disturbing form of wishful thinking.
So, how long until the Secret Service pays me a visit?
