Looking for a new iPod stereo

Two years ago, my mother gave me a Griffin Amplifi iPod speaker system for Christmas. It was fantastic and I used it happily almost every day since.

That is, unti Tuesday night, when it broke.

I was reaching for the volume/on-off button when spark of static electricity came out of my hand and jumped into the speaker system. From then on, the only thing it’s been capable of doing is charge my iPod as the speakers don’t work anymore. You can hear a tiny bit of noise from them — like holding a set of headphones a foot from your ear — but that’s it.

I’m guessing the static charge broke the amplifier on my Amplifi. I’m really disappointed in the brand, because you’d think they’d be resilient enough to handle a static charge that wasn’t even strong enough to make me jump.

The warranty on my stereo is already gone, so that’s no luck. Griffin discontinued the Amplifi a while ago, so there’s no point in going to the store for a new one.

Now I’m in the market for a new speaker system that I can plug my iPod into when I desire. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m looking for something that doesn’t take up too much shelf space and provides decent sound quality. I don’t want to pay more than $100.

Please leave your ideas in the comments box.

    Ihome makes a descent product.

I agree. Ihome (Best Buy sells them) has a nice portable (8 C batteries) /plug-in IPod boombox that plays Ipods, CDs and has AM/FM radio. Sound quality is pretty good and it even comes with a remote (not much range, but it works). I think it sells for around $75-80.
